First check to see if the light is steady or flashing. It means two different things.

If it is flashing pull over and call a tow service. A flashing Check Engine Light indicates something that is more serious.

A steady CEL (Check Engine Light) should be taken into a mechanic to see the issue, but it could be as simple a loose gas cap.
